Alford Triathlon 2017

Saturday 2nd September 2017

The 2017 edition of the Alford Triathlon, at the Alford Community Campus, will be on Saturday 2nd September!

Entries are open online at: resultsbase.net

The Alford Try-aTri is an event suitable for first-time triathletes and experienced racers. With a pool swim and relatively short cycle and run legs it is an ideal opportunity to ‘Try-a-Tri’. The solo event is however generally open only to those aged 16 and above in accordance with British Triathlon rules as the cycle leg is on open roads. We do however encourage under 16 year olds to take part in the swim and run sections of the team event, and proven competent young athletes aged 14 to 16 with appropriate race experience may be permitted to race the whole event with parental consent and a club disclaimer, please discuss with the race director.

Race Distances
• Swim = Novice 400m, Team 400m
• Cycle = Novice 13.5km, Team 13.5km
• Run = Novice 3km, Team 3km

Location and Car Parking

Alford is around 45 minutes drive from Aberdeen on the A944. On entering Alford from Aberdeen, continue through the village and follow the signposts left to the Community Campus. Approaching from Banchory or the North the Community Campus is on the right before entering Alford itself.

Registration

Registration will be signposted from the main entrance.

Transition Area

The transition area will be clearly visible next the car park and adjacent to the pool.

Swim Section

The new Alford pool is a 25m 4 lane pool allowing heats of 20 swimmers. When entering indicate a swim time to be in a lane with swimmers of similar ability!

Cycle section

The cycle follows BTF federation rules, this is a no-drafting event and no helmet means no race!

All junctions will be clearly signposted and marshalled but please note the cycle route has changed from last year!

On exiting the pool run to the transition area where you collect your bike and helmet, mounting your bike at the Bus parking area adjacent to the main Campus car park. Follow the new access road to join the A944 then left again onto the A980. The road takes you through the countryside to Muir of Fowlis where you turn left to pass the Muggarthaugh hotel. Take care around the S-bends here then take the left fork in the road to return to Alford over the Balloch. The descent here is fast and also requires care – marshals will direct you to turn right at the bottom onto Kingsford Road.  There are sharp left and right bends and traffic calming measures on this road, at the end or which you turn onto Greystone Rd which is followed at the top past traffic restriction bollards to the Campus.

Run Section – All

The run section is on firm paths, grass, and woodland in the Community Campus. Standard trainers or off road shoes are suitable.

Relay Athletes

Relay teams follow the same course as above. Relay changeovers  occur in a marked box in the transition area. The swimmer will exit pool and run to cyclist who will be standing in the tag box with bike still racked. The cyclist should not move until tagged by the swimmer. Likewise after the cycle has been completed the runner should not move until the bike has been racked and the runner tagged. The timing chip must be passed between the team members and the number between the runner and the cyclist.
